Splint, Shaker Tape, and Binder Cane

These three materials can be woven in many different patterns, both open and closed. Some of the most common are shown below.

Splint in a Herringbone Pattern Splints are available in a variety of materials, including ash, hickory, elm, and rattan. the wood splints are expensive and can be hard to find, since they must be split from the rings of carefully prepared trees. In contrast, rattan splint is economically priced, strong, and workable. The pattern shown is herringbone using rattan splint.

Shaker Tape in a Checkerboard Pattern Shaker tape is made from strips of cotton cloth. It comes in a variety of colors, and, as the name implies, is typically woven on Shaker-style chairs. It is usually in a checkerboard pattern with contrasting colors, as shown to the right.

Binder Cane Binder cane is a wider version of the same material used in machine and hand cane. In this case, it is used to weave a seat around the four rungs of a chair frame. The array of patterns that it can be woven in is too great to list.
